Adult Dual Diagnosis PHP & IOP
About Our Dual Diagnosis PHP & IOP
The Adult Dual Diagnosis Program at Eagle View Behavioral Health is designed to treat individuals who are facing both mental health disorders and substance use challenges at the same time. This combination—often referred to as co-occurring disorders—requires a specialized, integrated approach because each condition can intensify the other. Rather than treating mental health and substance use separately, Eagle View focuses on addressing both simultaneously within a structured, supportive clinical environment.
At its core, the adult dual diagnosis program is built on the understanding that recovery is most effective when care is coordinated. Many individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, trauma, or other psychiatric conditions may turn to substances such as alcohol, opioids, or prescription medications as a way to cope. Over time, this creates a cycle in which substance use worsens mental health symptoms, and untreated mental health issues increase the risk of relapse. Eagle View’s program is specifically structured to break this cycle through comprehensive, individualized care planning.

Flexible Levels of Care for Dual Diagnosis Treatment
The program is offered at multiple levels of care, including Partial Hospitalization (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient (IOP), allowing patients to receive treatment while still living at home.
In the PHP setting, individuals typically attend treatment five days per week for several hours each day, participating in a full schedule of therapeutic groups and clinical services. The IOP option provides a step-down level of care, with fewer hours per week, offering flexibility while still maintaining consistent therapeutic support.

Relapse Prevention and Understanding the Recovery Process
A key component of the adult dual diagnosis program is relapse prevention. Patients work closely with clinicians to identify personal triggers, high-risk situations, and patterns of thinking that contribute to substance use. Through group therapy and individual sessions, they develop practical strategies to manage cravings, avoid relapse, and respond effectively when challenges arise. This includes building coping skills, strengthening emotional regulation, and creating structured plans for maintaining sobriety outside of treatment. Relapse prevention is not treated as a one-time discussion, but as an ongoing process integrated into daily programming.
In addition to relapse prevention, psychoeducation (often called “psych ed”) plays a central role in treatment. These sessions help patients better understand their mental health diagnoses, how symptoms manifest, and how substance use interacts with those symptoms. For example, individuals may learn how anxiety can drive substance use, how depression can impact motivation and decision-making, or how trauma can influence both emotional responses and addictive behaviors. By increasing awareness and insight, psychoeducation empowers patients to take a more active role in their recovery and make informed decisions about their care.
Evidence-Based Therapy and Skill Development
The program also emphasizes skill-building for managing mental health symptoms in real time.
Patients are introduced to evidence-based therapeutic approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which focus on identifying negative thought patterns, improving emotional regulation, and developing healthier behavioral responses. These skills are practiced in group settings and reinforced through repetition, allowing individuals to build confidence in their ability to manage stress, anxiety, mood swings, and other symptoms without turning to substances.
Group therapy is a central feature of the dual diagnosis program. In these sessions, patients connect with others who are facing similar challenges, creating a sense of shared understanding and support. Group discussions often focus on topics such as relapse prevention, coping strategies, emotional processing, and interpersonal skills. This collaborative environment helps reduce isolation and encourages accountability, both of which are critical for long-term recovery.
Comprehensive Clinical Support and Medication Management
Another important aspect of the program is medication management. Because many individuals in dual diagnosis treatment have underlying psychiatric conditions, medications may be prescribed to help stabilize mood, reduce anxiety, or address other symptoms. At Eagle View, medication management is overseen by a multidisciplinary team that includes psychiatrists and nurse practitioners, ensuring that treatment is carefully monitored and adjusted as needed. This medical support is integrated with therapy, rather than treated as a separate component, reinforcing the program’s holistic approach.
The clinical team at Eagle View includes psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, therapists, and other behavioral health professionals who collaborate to provide comprehensive care. Each patient receives an individualized treatment plan that reflects their specific diagnoses, history, and recovery goals. This team-based approach ensures that all aspects of a patient’s well-being—mental, emotional, and behavioral—are addressed throughout the course of treatment.
Another defining feature of the adult dual diagnosis program is its focus on real-world functioning. Because patients return home at the end of each treatment day, they have the opportunity to immediately apply what they are learning in therapy to their daily lives. This might include practicing communication skills with family members, using coping techniques during moments of stress, or navigating environments that may have previously triggered substance use. The ability to practice these skills in real time helps reinforce learning and build confidence in maintaining recovery outside of a controlled setting.
Discharge Planning and Ongoing Recovery Support
Discharge planning and aftercare are also integral components of the program. As patients progress, the treatment team works with them to develop a plan for continued support, which may include outpatient therapy, medication management, peer support groups, or community resources. This continuity of care helps ensure that individuals do not feel unsupported once they complete the program, reducing the risk of relapse and promoting sustained recovery.
Ultimately, the adult dual diagnosis program at Eagle View Behavioral Health is designed to provide a structured, supportive environment where individuals can address both mental health symptoms and substance use in a meaningful way. By combining relapse prevention, psychoeducation, therapeutic skill-building, and medical support, the program equips patients with the tools they need to manage their symptoms, maintain sobriety, and rebuild their lives.
Through this integrated approach, individuals are not only treated for their conditions but are also empowered to move forward with greater stability, resilience, and confidence in their recovery journey.
